Staying In Shape While You Travel
For many travellers, their adventures are about breaking out of their regular routines which sometimes includes staying active. However you've fit physical activity into your life may make perfect sense when you're at home, but it presents unique challenges once you hit the road. Here's just a few of our tips for staying in shape while you travel.
Bring Your Workout Shoes
This is probably the most important part of getting it done. Bring the right shoes for working out! There's tons of brands and shoes that make footwear that's pretty light and flexible, so use that to your advantage if you're worried about luggage space. If your sneakers are particularly bulky, it might be an ever better idea to wear them on the plane. Not only will this free up space in your luggage, but who doesn't need comfortable shoes for the flight?
Pack Some (Light) Equipment
You can skip the heavy dumbbells and kettle bells this time, but packing light equipment can be a great help in your workouts. Think skipping ropes to get your cardio fix and resistance bands for muscle training and this should be a solid base. Don't go crazy with it though, your luggage should be full of other essentials before you add in fitness gear. Keep in mind, lots of everyday items can substitute for weights in most situations. Large cans of food may not seem too heavy at first, but you may change your tune after a few arm raises.
Do It First Thing
One o the hardest parts of working out on vacation is finding the motivation. It's difficult to tear yourself away from comfortable hotel or guest house beds to squeeze in a workout. It's important to get it out of the way early in the day so it frees up the rest of your time for other activities. Also, think high intensity instead of lengthy when it comes to your workouts so you're not spending your precious vacation time sweating it out. Not to mention, getting a great workout in at the top of your day will give you tons of energy for the rest of your day.
Walk As Much As You Can
Walking is one of the best forms of cardio you can do, so get lots of it in while you're in other countries. Forget the workout benefits, walking is a great way to see much more of your destination. It's easy to miss things if you're always in a taxi or on public transit, so try to get around on foot as much as you possibly can. Eventually, you'll stop thinking of it as deliberate exercise and see it as just a way to explore somewhere new.
Think Outside The Gym
Let's face it - not everywhere you go will have a state-of-the-art gym to use while you're there, so get creative and use what's easily accessible to you. Is your vacation close to water? Swimming and surfing are both great ways to stay in shape, so keep that in mind. If you're an adventure traveller who's destinations are based on the best places to hike, rock climb, ski, snowboard, deep sea dive & more, remember those are all things that keep you in shape as well, so you may not even need to carve out extra time for more "traditional" workouts.
Some people are diligent about their workouts and fear that even a bit of slacking can lead to them falling off the wagon completely, but it's important to remember that vacations are about gaining new experiences and taking a break from your usual so don't be afraid to indulge a little!
